Kindergarten at Sunkids.

Providing your child with the best preparation for school and a future of learning.

What is Kindergarten?

The Best Preparation for School.

Kindergarten is a part-time educational program available in the year before school that prepares your child for their future of formal education.

The Kindergarten program is facilitated by Bachelor qualified Early Childhood Teachers, and focuses on helping children transition to school, develop a love of learning, make friends, and develop skills useful for life.

Sunkids offer a Government-approved Kindergarten program at each of our centres, incorporating our own emergent play-based curriculum that enriches a holistic approach to teaching and learning.

Provide your child with the perfect start to primary school by enrolling in the Sunkids Kindergarten Program. Enquire online to arrange a meeting with one of our Early Childhood Teachers.

Why Kindergarten?

Providing a Confident Start to School.

Kindergarten provides your child with the best possible preparation for a future of formal education and transition into school, whilst helping to develop key skills necessary for success in life.

Through participation in a Kindergarten program, your child will develop their physical, social, intellectual, language and emotional abilities, whilst preparing for the routine and structure of a school environment.

Towards the end of the year, your Early Childhood Teacher will develop a transition statement, which is a document that supports your child’s transition into school, by providing details surrounding their learning and development, their strengths and their support requirements.

Kindergarten is a wonderful opportunity for all children to develop key skills and a genuine love for learning.

Our Kindergarten Program.

Quality Kindergarten @ Sunkids.

Our Government-approved Kindergarten program is available at all Sunkids centres and runs between 8.30am – 4pm each day. Our Kindy children also have access to care in the centre from 6am – 6pm year-round, excluding Public Holidays.

Run by passionate, Bachelor-qualified Early Childhood Teachers, our play-based program incorporates your child’s interests into meaningful learning experiences. Our Kindy rooms also share a project approach to learning, completing projects that extend on interest, questions and wonders of the world.

Being within a long day centre provides unique learning experiences for our Kindy children, including shared play environments allowing for sibling interactions and mixed-age grouping where appropriate.

The Sunkids Centre Managers and Kindergarten Teachers work closely with local schools to support each child’s transition, assist families with enrolments and orientations, and to prepare children for the routine and structure of the school environment.

Through play, we look to embed the following 4 key skills areas are into our Kindergarten program…

Transitioning to School.

Making the Big Step Small.

The Sunkids Kindergarten Program helps transition children into school through strong working relationships and communication between the Kindergarten Teacher, Parents and Prep Teachers.

Working alongside local schools, we aim to develop a link between Kindergarten and school for the children to assist during this significant period, making the transition as smooth and enjoyable as possible.

Throughout the second half of the year, Prep Teachers from local schools are invited into the Centre to meet and interact with the children. This practice supports the children in developing connections with their Teachers before starting school, allowing them to feel comfortable and confident in the transition.

Sunkids also complete transition statements for each child. These statements are written from a strengths-based perspective and describes your child’s progress within each of the learning and development areas, and identifies strategies to support your child in their transition to school.

This document, with your permission, is shared with your child’s chosen school to provide your child’s prep teachers with a greater insight into your child, their abilities, and support requirements prior to beginning school.

Help make your child’s big step into school small by enrolling into a Sunkids Kindergarten Program. Enquire online to arrange a meeting with one of our Early Childhood Teachers, or to view our facilities.

Frequently Asked Kindy Questions.

When should I enrol into Kindergarten at Sunkids?

Children currently attending Sunkids will be automatically enrolled in our Kindergarten program the year they are eligible, and have priority of access for additional days.

If your child does not currently attend a Sunkids Centre, we strongly encourage you to enrol your child no later than June the year prior to their start to ensure their placement within our Kindergarten program.

How much does Kindergarten cost?

The cost of Kindergarten will remain the same as your current fees with Sunkids. When enrolled in a Kindergarten program however you may be eligible for additional subsidies, if you or your child holds an Australian Government Health Care Card, if you hold a Department of Veterans’ Gold Card, White Card, or Pension Card, or if you or your child identify as being Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander. If you meet the criteria above you may be eligible to receive an additional subsidy of $33.75 per week from your Kindergarten fees.

Is Kindergarten compulsary?

In Queensland Kindergarten is not compulsory, however, it is strongly recommended to ensure a strong start in your child’s schooling journey. If you choose to enrol your child in a Kindergarten program, they must attend a minimum of 15 hours per week for 40 weeks, or 1 school year, to be eligible for the benefits of a Kindergarten program.

What if my chosen primary school also has a Kindergarten?

Some schools may offer a Kindergarten program that is run during school hours and terms, the difference between a Kindergarten program in this setting and a Sunkids Centre, is that Sunkids Kindergarten children have access to education and care year-round, for up to 12 hours per day.

What if my chosen primary school isn't local to Sunkids?

Sunkids have had many children attend schools outside of our local community, in this instance our Early Childhood Teachers will make contact with the school to gain an understanding of their priorities and expectations, before developing a professional relationship that will support your child’s transition into school. As with our local schools, your child’s Prep Teacher will be invited into the Centre to meet and engage with your child within their learning environment.

What if it's mandatory to attend Kindergarten at my chosen primary school?

Some private schools provide enrolment preference to children who attend the Kindergarten program run by that school. In this instance, children are able to attend Kindergarten at that chosen school for the days required, and then also attend Sunkids outside of these hours for additional care.

Parents are to note that their CCS may be affected if their child attends the two centres on the same day.

What if I don't know what primary school to choose?

Sunkids Early Childhood Teachers have developed professional relationships with schools in the local community and are able to support families in selecting the school best suited to their child’s needs. Sunkids work collaboratively with local schools and actively advertise upcoming open days and prep orientations to support families.

Is my child old enough for Kindergarten?

Your child can attend Kindergarten in the year they will turn 4 years old by the 30th of June.

Check out The Early Years Count’s Kindy Calculator  to see what year your child can start Kindergarten.

How is Kindergarten different to child care?

Kindergarten prepares children for the transition into school through play-based learning. All approved Kindergarten programs are based on the Queensland Kindergarten Learning Guideline. The guideline supports teachers to deliver a Kindergarten program that meets national and state quality standards and regulations.

Will Sunkids help me enrol into Primary School?

Although your chosen Sunkids will not complete your school enrolment, they will be there to support you through each step. Sunkids have developed professional relationships with schools in the local community and often receive detailed information packs and enrolment information for families to access. Our Centre Managers and Early Childhood Teachers will support you in connecting with your chosen school and initiating the enrolment process. We continue to support your child’s transition to school through inviting local Prep Teachers into the Centre to meet and engage with the children in their learning environment, as well as promoting orientation visits to the school.

Do I still receive Child Care Subsidy (CCS)?

The CCS you are receiving prior to enrolling in a Kindergarten program will remain, however, if you are currently not eligible for CCS or are only entitled to a reduced number of hours per fortnight, you may be able to receive a sum of 36 hours per fortnight, equalling two 9 hours sessions per week, through Centrelink. Your chosen Sunkids will be able to assist you in this process.
