Safety @Sunkids

Leading The Way InChildcare Safety

Across Australia, there is growing awareness around the importance of safety measures in childcare.
At Sunkids, the health, safety, and wellbeing of every child in our care has always been our highest priority. Families trust us with their most precious little ones, and we take that responsibility very seriously by continually investing in safer, smarter environments.
Our commitment extends to both children and staff through work health and safety practices that create secure, supportive, and nurturing environments.
To uphold these standards, Sunkids has established a comprehensive safety framework that ensures compliance and accountability in all aspects of our operations – from staff training and supervision to visitor management and digital systems.

Our top safety measures, shown in the infographic, form the foundation of this framework. These include:

  • Restricted Areas Policy – Ensuring children are never permitted in staff-only or hazardous zones, with any breach resulting in immediate and decisive action.

  • Pre-Employment Checks & Blue Card Compliance – Every team member completes comprehensive screening, including reference, qualification, and background checks, and must hold a valid Blue Card that is continuously monitored for compliance.

  • Whistleblower Protection – Upholding a formal policy that encourages transparency and accountability, allowing staff to raise concerns safely and confidentially.

  • Visitor Procedures – Implementing clear processes for all guests signing into centres, ensuring they are guided, supervised, and adhere to our safety requirements at all times.

  • No Personal Devices – Enforcing a zero-tolerance policy for personal phone use in centres, with all technology provided, owned, and securely monitored by Sunkids to protect privacy and maintain professional focus.

  • Headcount Tracking – Using digital systems to monitor real-time educator-to-child ratios, ensuring accurate supervision and consistent compliance throughout the day.

  • Leadership Coverage – Guaranteeing a Centre Manager or Assistant Centre Manager is always onsite during core hours (8:30 am – 4:30 pm) to provide strong leadership, immediate support, and operational oversight.

Together, these measures form our commitment to child safety. They ensure every Sunkids centre operates with clarity, accountability, and care – supported by systems that protect, empower, and continuously improve.

The following sections listed below explore each area of our Child Safety Framework in more detail, outlining how these standards are applied day-to-day across our centres to create safe, welcoming, and nurturing environments for every child.

Staff Training & Induction.

@ Sunkids, we believe that quality education and care start with well-prepared, confident Educators. Every team member undergoes comprehensive screening and induction to ensure they understand our safety expectations, policies, and values. Ongoing access to training and development helps staff maintain compliance, strengthen their skills, and deliver exceptional care in every centre.
Pre-Employment Checks

Before joining the Sunkids team, every applicant completes comprehensive pre-employment screening. This includes verifying professional references, qualifications, Blue Card status, and employment history. These steps ensure we employ only the most trustworthy, capable, and caring Educators to nurture our children.

Blue Card Compliance

All Sunkids Educators and team members are required to hold a valid Blue Card before starting work. We use an approved monitoring system that automatically tracks card validity and sends alerts if any changes occur, guaranteeing full compliance and peace of mind for families.

Staff Training Access

We provide all staff with access to extensive professional development and training opportunities through our dedicated online platform. Educators complete mandatory safety and compliance training during work hours and have the option to access additional learning modules to support career progression and educational excellence.

Training Oversight

Training completion is closely monitored at every centre. Centre Managers and Sunkids Management review progress reports to ensure all Educators meet training requirements and stay up to date with the latest industry standards and regulations.

Online Training System

Our easy-to-use online training platform delivers interactive, engaging content, covering everything from child protection and first aid to workplace conduct and educational best practice. This ensures consistency, accessibility, and accountability across all Sunkids centres.

Inductions & Follow-Ups

Every new Educator and team member completes a thorough induction before entering the centre environment. Inductions cover child safety, operational procedures, professional conduct, and emergency protocols. Centre leadership then conducts follow-ups to ensure full understanding and alignment with Sunkids’ standards.

Centre Operations.

Strong centre leadership and clear operational policies ensure consistency and accountability across all Sunkids locations. Each Centre Manager plays a key role in maintaining compliance, guiding their team, and fostering transparent communication. Through defined policies and reporting structures, we create a culture of integrity, professionalism, and shared responsibility for child safety and wellbeing.
Policy Clarity

All Sunkids policies are up-to-date, clearly documented, and accessible to staff and families. From supervision and behaviour guidance to safety and communication, every policy is designed to maintain consistent, transparent, and compliant operations across all centres.

Centre Manager Accountability

Each Centre Manager takes ownership of their centre’s daily operations, safety standards, and compliance requirements. They conduct regular checks, lead by example, and are directly supported by Sunkids Management to ensure every child receives the highest standard of care and education.

Internal Reporting & Guidance

We maintain clear, confidential channels for staff to raise concerns or seek support. Regular communication between Educators, Centre Managers, and Sunkids Management ensures issues are addressed quickly and that staff always have access to the guidance they need.

Whistleblower Protection

Sunkids’ formal Whistleblower Policy empowers staff to report safety or ethical concerns confidentially and without fear of reprisal. This policy reinforces our culture of trust, accountability, and continuous improvement across every level of the organisation.

Centre Security.

The safety of children, families, and staff is at the heart of everything we do. Sunkids centres follow strict safety and access protocols to ensure all environments remain secure and monitored at all times. From visitor management and restricted access zones to ongoing safety audits, we maintain a proactive approach to creating and sustaining safe, trusted spaces for every child.
Visitor Safety

All visitors at Sunkids centres must sign in, complete a safety acknowledgement, and remain under supervision for the duration of their visit. These measures ensure every person onsite understands and adheres to our strict safety and child protection requirements.

Visitor Procedures

Visitors, including families, contractors, and specialists, follow structured procedures when entering a centre. This includes clear check-in requirements, restricted access areas, and professional supervision at all times to maintain a secure and transparent environment.

Restricted Access For Non-Educators

Certain areas within our centres, such as activity rooms and playgrounds, are reserved for Educators and children only. Non-educational staff (such as cooks or administrative personnel) may only enter these spaces when operationally necessary and must always be supervised.

Restricted Areas Policy

Sunkids centres include clearly designated restricted zones, such as staff-only areas, storage rooms, and offices, that are not accessible to children. This protects children’s safety, maintains order, and supports regulatory compliance.

Third-Party Supervision

Any external professionals working within our centres, such as maintenance workers, therapists, or photographers, are never left unsupervised. A Sunkids staff member is always present to ensure appropriate supervision and safeguard every interaction with children.

Safety Audit Compliance

Each centre undergoes regular safety audits, covering everything from facility maintenance to policy implementation. Sunkids Management reviews these audits to confirm that all safety standards are met and that continuous improvements are implemented where needed.

Staffing & Coverage.

Consistent and attentive supervision is essential to providing safe, nurturing environments for children. Sunkids carefully manages staffing ratios, headcounts, and leadership coverage to ensure every child is always in sight, supported, and cared for. Our structured approach guarantees strong leadership presence and adequate supervision throughout the day.
Headcount Tracking

Every Sunkids centre uses a digital headcount system to track staff and children in real time. This ensures accurate child-to-Educator ratios, immediate visibility of staffing levels, and consistent supervision throughout the day.

Staff Ratio & Coverage

We strictly maintain all required Educator-to-child ratios in accordance with national regulations. Short breaks or transitions are managed with planned coverage to ensure children are never left unsupervised and that high-quality engagement continues at all times.

Core Hours Leadership Coverage

A Centre Manager or Assistant Centre Manager is always onsite between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm – our core hours of operation. This ensures consistent leadership, immediate support for Educators, and prompt decision-making when required.

Systems & Communication.

Modern systems and clear communication support safety, accuracy, and transparency across all centres. Digital tools like online sign-in systems and incident reporting platforms help us monitor operations efficiently and respond quickly when needed. Our approach ensures that technology enhances—not replaces—the personal care and attention families expect from Sunkids.
Digital Visitor Sign-In Systems

All Sunkids centres use a secure digital visitor management system for check-ins and check-outs. This ensures accurate record-keeping, improves efficiency, and strengthens safety by tracking who is onsite at any given time.

Incident Reporting

Our online incident reporting system allows Educators to record and escalate any incidents immediately. Reports are automatically shared with Management for review and follow-up, ensuring transparency, accountability, and swift resolution.

Phone Use

At Sunkids, our Educators are fully present and focused on the children in their care. We have a zero-tolerance policy for personal phone use during work hours, supported by comprehensive device monitoring to ensure all technology is used responsibly and professionally. This safeguards children’s privacy, encourages meaningful engagement, and upholds our high standards of attention and care.
